ART TEACHERS SHOULD HAVE THE SPACE TO BE REBELLIOUS is a creative research project between Joanna Brinton, Freeland's Foundation and Freya Kehoe.

Between February and July 2024, Brinton & Kehoe met to consider the potentials for 'rebellion' in art education today.

We began by talking, planning and making in Brinton’s studio, creating the 'Freedom Portal Planner' to consider the boundaries, motivations and possibilities for rebellion in teaching and art practice. This was designed and printed at Good Studio, Brixton on the risograph.

The project then moved to the classroom where prompts were used to promote conversation and exchange based on 'making space' and 'daily practice'. We found space for change in lessons and hallways, lunch time clubs and after school workshops.

The art cupboard was identified as the only 'place for rest' in the school day, so a small table and studio space was created as a site for possibility away from the performance of teaching. It was here we discovered a disused pottery wheel, which became part of our daily practice, using this to throw pots and test ideas at school and in Freeland's Foundation's project space.

We opened out the project through a READING GROUP, an ARTISTEACHER event and workshops for students and staff in both organisations, treating the project space as a temporary studio.

The project culminated with 'PORRIDGE AS ART', an ode to the daily practice we'd developed throughout the project and an opportunity to use the pots we'd thrown, glazed and fired with help from Rochester Square.
